This report provides a comprehensive summary of the role of plastics in consumer electrical and electronic (E&E) equipment from product design through recovery and recycling. The emphasis in this report is on E&E equipment collected from residential sources. This is the area receiving attention from municipalities and states as they begin to address the expanding volumes of obsolete computers, TVs, and other consumer electronics and small household appliances. The collection, remanufacturing, and recycling infrastructure for the industrial and business sector has evolved significantly over the past ten years compared to the residential sector. Readers involved in all aspects of E&E equipment recovery, however, will find the plastics-related information in Report 2000 of interest. Report 2000 provides up-to-date information addressing the following key questions: 1. What are …

Analysis of Technology and Infrastructure of the Paper Recycling Industry in New York City

Executive Summary The objective of this study was to examine the technology and infrastructure of paper recycling in New York City and devise ways for increasing paper recovery. At present, " residential " wastepaper is collected as a separate stream by the Department of Sanitation of New York City (DSNY). In 2003, DSNY collected approximately 414,960 tons of paper, i.e. about 35 percent of the...

Challenges and Alternatives to Plastics Recycling in the Automotive Sector

Plastics are increasingly a preferred material choice in designing and developing complex, consumer products, such as automobiles, because they are mouldable, lightweight, and are often perceived to be highly recyclable materials. However, actually recycling the heterogeneous plastics used in such durable items is challenging, and presents very different scenarios to how simple products, such a...

The potential environmental gains from recycling waste plastics: simulation of transferring recycling and recovery technologies to Shenyang, China.

With the increasing attention on developing a low-carbon economy, it is necessary to seek appropriate ways on reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions through innovative municipal solid waste management (MSWM), such as urban symbiosis. However, quantitative assessments on the environmental benefits of urban symbiosis, especially in developing countries, are limited because only a limited number ...

Plastics Recycling Coupled with Enhanced Oil Recovery. A Critical Survey of the Concept

This contribution gives a critical discussion about a concept for plastics recycling with thermal treatment. Plastics wastes are converted into synthesis gas. The crude synthesis gas is injected into exhausted oil reservoirs. In this way atmospheric pollution is avoided. The oil reservoir has filtering capacities. Moreover there is a chance that the hydrogen injected may crack the geopolymers i...
